Johnny Leung
About This Spot
Johnny Leung, tucked away on Kirkstall Hill in Leeds, greets you with the familiar hum of a neighborhood favorite where simplicity feels like home. This is the kind of local Chinese takeaway that carries the warmth of long-standing community ties, inviting you to slow down just enough to savor both the flavors and the moments behind the counter.
Walking up to Johnny Leung, you sense the steady rhythm of a place that has quietly cared for its guests over decades. The pace rarely rushes—whether it’s families picking up a weekend treat or friends gathering after a busy day. The atmosphere is comfortably unpretentious, with a kind of unspoken understanding that the food here is about honest satisfaction and consistent quality, not flash or fuss.
The menu reflects this thoughtful approach. Imagine the crisp, lightly seasoned salt and pepper chips that bring a satisfying crunch, or tender spare ribs that carry a subtle Peking-inspired depth without overwhelming the senses. The nuanced spices and comforting curries offer a gentle kick that feels just right alongside the familiar fried rice dishes and hand-stirred noodles. Every item has a quietly confident character, as if shaped by hands who know this cuisine intimately and want to share that love without complication.
What stands out most is the unhurried service that feels more like catching up with a friendly neighbor than placing an order. Without the bells and whistles of delivery platforms, Johnny Leung remains a place that cherishes face-to-face connection—an experience customers keep returning to because of the trustworthy taste and the subtle human moments that linger long after the food is gone.
In a world where convenience often trumps care, Johnny Leung is a reminder that some of the best meals come with a bit of patience and a warm welcome. It’s a spot that rewards those who seek reassurance in the familiar and a genuine connection to their local food scene.

Been ordering from Wendy for close to 20 years. Fantastic food at great prices. Highly recommend the Young Chow Fried Rice. Salt and Pepper Chips, the satays (not peanut based but deep and with a kick), and for duck lovers the Hong Kong style duck is very good. They don’t deliver or subscribe to the delivery services (JustEat, UberEats, Deliveroo etc) so you have to collect. Just means they constantly deliver good quality and aren’t under pressure to cater to the masses.

Always loved going here since I was a kid. Same great quality. Always clean and fantastic service. Recommend the char siu chow mein and chips and gravy. This is a take out meal service only. Best quality food!
